Our Mission
In the New Testament the call of Jesus is very clear. We are to make disciples, and when we study Jesus’ ministry, we find he used seven methods to shape and form his disciples. The seven methods were:

Our Method
At McGuire United Methodist Church we invite you to be a part of the Journey in Discipleship and experience the personal transformation Jesus Christ can bring into your life. Directed by Allison Milliron, this spiritual journey is a collection of time-tested, proven experiences for adults patterned after the disciple-making practices of Jesus. While this journey will take years for an adult to complete, each of the steps in the journey are:

Part 1 of the Journey: FIRST STEPS
First Steps is a three session class led by the pastor on the history, beliefs, & practices of the United Methodist Church. As United Methodists we are rooted in the historic Christian faith, but we have a history, beliefs, and practices that are distinct from our sisters and brothers in the Baptist, Catholic, Pentecostal, Independent, Charismatic, Presbyterian, Vineyard, and Church of Christ churches. All newcomers, members, and leaders of McGuire church are invited to take this course and understand our United Methodist distinctives.

Part 2 of the Journey: The Discipleship PATHWAY
The Discipleship Pathway is a collection of short-term courses on the Bible and living out the membership vows of our prayers, gifts, witness, & service. The courses are led by a variety of people, and are offered at a variety of times and venues.
1. Bible 101 is a course on everything from how we got our Bible, to Bible translations, to doing a word study, to daily devotions (1 session).
2. The Workbook of Living Prayer has been the #1 teaching resource on prayer in the United Methodist Church for over 30 years (7 sessions).
3. The Workbook of Intercessory Prayer is the popular follow-up course to The Workbook of Living Prayer (8 sessions).
4. Celebration of Discipline is a leading course on spiritual disciplines based on the renowned book by Richard Foster that was named one of the top ten books on spiritual formation in the 20th century (13 sessions).
5. Financial Peace University by Dave Ramsey is the #1 course in the nation on debt reduction, saving, buying, and investing. During the course the average household pays off $5,300 of debt, saves $2,700, and is able to give like never before (9 sessions).
6. Becoming a Contagious Christian is the #1 training course in the nation on becoming a witness for Jesus Christ (6 sessions).
7. Network: Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts, Passion, & Personal Style for Ministry is the #1 training course in the nation on discovering spiritual gifts & preparing people for Christian service (6 sessions).

Part 3 of the Journey: MOUNTAIN TOP EXPERIENCES
Mountain Top Experiences are high commitment, life-changing Christian experiences. The experiences are led by a variety of people, and are offered at a variety of times and venues.
1. In-depth Bible study groups like Disciple Bible Study or Covenant Bible Study
2. Study groups in the Christian classics with authors like John Wesley, St. John of the Cross, Brother Lawrence, C.S. Lewis, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, St. Teresa of Avila, or Richard Foster
3. Accountable discipleship groups like Companions in Christ or Renovare groups
4. Retreats like contemplative retreats or marriage renewal retreats
5. 4th Day Weekends like Cursillo, Walk to Emmaus, or Chrysallis begin on Thursday night and conclude Sunday afternoon, and look at Christianity as a lifestyle from a New Testament perspective. The weekend is a powerful, grace-filled, spiritual renewal weekend.
6. Witness Ministries like Kairos or Epiphany Prison Ministry
7. The Academy for Spiritual Leadership is the official spiritual formation ministry of the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church.
8. Field trips to highly effective churches, conferences, or ministries like Church of the Resurrection, Ginghamsburg UMC, and the Youth Specialties National Youth Workers Convention are a powerful way to grow in faith.
9. A biblical study tour of Israel is offered every two years in January by the Bishop of the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church.
10. A biblical study tour of the missionary journeys of Paul
11. Study tours of our Methodist heritage in the United States & England
12. Louisiana Volunteers in Mission are opportunities to serve & witness for Christ among the poor at state, national, and international sites.
