The History of McGuire United Methodist Church

In 1949 the Methodist Men’s group of First Methodist Church of West Monroe envisioned the establishment of a new Methodist congregation in the rapidly growing northern area of the city. Miss Kate McGuire agreed to donate land at North 12th Street and Arkansas Road for the construction of a new church building. McGuire church was named in honor of the McGuire family who donated the land. A temporary frame structure was built, and in October 1949 the first worship service of McGuire Methodist Church was held. In July 1950 Rev. W. C. Mason was appointed as the first full-time pastor. In 1952 ground breaking services were held for a more complete building. For fifty years McGuire United Methodist Church grew at the North 12th Street and Arkansas Road location in worship, discipleship, and mission.

In July 1999 after years of dreaming, discussion, and assessment of our ministry, the process of acquiring a new location for the purpose of a new church building began. Our church voted unanimously to purchase 22.3 acres at our present location at the corner of Arkansas Road and Dean Chapel Road.  Seven years later in August 2006, Phase 1 of the fellowship hall, education, and office buildings was completed, and our first worship service was held at our new location. Eight years later in September 2013, Phase 2 of the new sanctuary, foyer, and youth wing was completed. Today the people of the McGuire United Methodist Church remember our past, and we look to a new future in our worship, discipleship, and mission.
